Never seen a younger person in one. Is it because there is no Scion xB now?
Also, how the hell is this thing an “SUV/Crossover” ?

I remember posting about it not too long ago because Motortrend determined it was the best “ compact S UV” you can buy (not a CUV somehow). Surprise, the hatchback is the best CUV you can buy! What a surprise!
But yes, it is obviously a conventional upright hatchback and yes they are driven by people who want something easy to get in and out of that is cheap and reliable. I see a lot of young to middle age professional women driving them and not many men at all.

My previous neighbor was a Millennial (and a hipster douche fwiw ) who drove a red Soul. 100% convinced he bought it because the hamsters told him to.

C ars designed as entry level options for young people inadvertently make great old people cars. Cheap, simple, just the right height so you don’t hurt your back getting in or out.

i had a coworker in his 20s with one... he was a trump supporter though

I like the Soul, I found it to be refreshingly unpretentious . Not too much of an angry styling, no big wheels, no cladding or fake outdoorsy bullshit. T he turbo model seems to be fairly zippy , and here again, not pretending to be a Nordschleife record contender. Just a practical easy and fun car.
I must be getting old ...

Just like the Honda Element used to be, I see a very even mix of young people and old people. Those of us in the middle usually need more space.
As much as people like to pretend otherwise, cars that appeal to 20-somethings also tend to appeal to 60-somethings. This has never been more true than today, since crossovers (with their hip-and-back-friendly ride heights) are popular with everyone.
I’m more amazed at how the Audi Q3 is 100% kids and the Q5 is 100% elderly in my area. Same with HR-V vs CR-V, and X1 vs X3.

My 20 y/o cousin drives a Soul. M y coworker (middle aged guy) has recently been driving his 17 y/o daughters Soul because it gets better gas mileage than his other car.

My dad had two basically because they were easy to get in and out of because of the seat height.

In that case, my GTI is the best compact SUV you can buy, and I’ll fight anyone that thinks a Soul is better......
That said, the Soul is the perfect boomer mobile. Cheap, simple, reliable (i think?), easy to get in and out, boring.

Exactly, see: Honda Element, Honda Fit, Scion B oxy T hingy, etc....

Nope. My sister has had one since 2011, shes mid-30s. I guess she wanted a Cube until she drove it and then got the other funky new thing on the market.

Called an SUV probably because insurance rates are cheaper than hatchbacks? IDK if that is true
![]() 07/24/2020 at 11:45 |

The Soul isn’t boring, it just isn’t in retesting. It has a mildly amusing cutesy aesthetic that makes it approachable, inoffensive, and basically gives you permission to have fun without caring too much about what others think.
The GTI is more low slung than the Soul. It follows the upright cube design common in kei cars where every inch counts but upsizes it to a scale usable to Americans. I've been in both and the sould is more of a compact utility vehicle than the GTI, but neither are a crossover.

I have some friends in their late 30s with one, but that's not exactly young.

Ill be straight with this the soul is for fat or older or both who can’t step up into an SUV but want to sit up higher and don’t want/afford a minivan
That or some really bad teenage/college student driver that thought it was cute or was the only car their parents would buy.
There is absolutely no in-between with this shit stain of a car

Also driven by mutated hamsters raised exclusively on Jersey shore reruns. Got it

I’m always happy to get one of these as a cheap rental. They’re usually pretty well equipped and drive well enough. I don’t think I would ever buy one though!

Fair. Nothing is technically boring if you’re caning it on a back road...... Or jumping railroad tracks in it.

I see quite a few younger people driving them, but always the previous body style. New ones are always driven by old people.
I’m convinced grandparents by them new then hand them off to their grandkids as their first car when they turn in their license because they just can’t see well enough to drive anymore.

Have you seen the new generation/facelift?
I agree they were unpretentious and cute, even if they did kind of suck (asked a few people who owned them, all older women)
Now they look like this:
![]() 07/24/2020 at 13:33 |
|
Not all of them, but most of them are, yes. Old people like them because they’re inexpensive, fuel efficient, easy to park, and the high roof and high seating position make them so easy to get in and out of, you know.
The fact that they do have a certain style about them probably helps, too, nobody wants to feel like they’re driving around in a road going chai rlift (seriously, why the hell are those things so ugly? There’s probably a business there selling ones that can be customized to blend into the decor of people’s houses, especially for more affluent older folks who still care about that sort of thing) .
I’d say the xB and PT Cruiser being dead are indeed a major boon to the Soul, since its target market also loved both of them.

Yep, and you can’t sell a young person an “old man’s car” (most young people, anyway, I drove a Cadillac Fleetwood when I was 21, and a Grand Marquis at 25 ), but you absolutely can sell an old person a “young person car” - its even easier with the current generation of elderly consumers, since the Baby Boomers have been particularly obsessed with desperately clinging to any appearance of youth for decades. Their parents didn’t care as much about looking old when they actually got old.

The EPA classes it as a “small station wagon” - calling it an SUV is strictly a marketing move on Kia’s part, since anything that isn’t an SUV or a CUV is basically showroom poison in this day and age.

My best buddy since the 5th grade is 60, and they have TWO (one in FL, one in MD). Driven one - there are worse cars.

Also, how the hell is this thing an “SUV/Crossover”?
To be fair, it’s about as good at off-roading as most other modern SUVs and crossovers...

I own one and turn 50 this year. I am a retired male that worked in the automotive industry for 30 years.

I definitely don't mean to insult you there. Just what I've noticed. I think it is quite a sharp looking design and I would own one in a heartbeat if they'd offer the good colors on the manual.

I think so. It was the same thing with both gens of the Scion Xb. Most of the shit that automakers made that targeted Millennials /Young people were almost exclusively bought and driven by the older crowd.

Ye s, there is a certain “stormtrooper” vibe to it.
